A 10-Year-Old's Wisdom Inspires Hope for Our Island

Happy Ocean committee members had the pleasure of meeting Connor Fitzpatrick, an inspiring 10-year old boy, at the Happy Ocean Beeswax Wrap DIY night on June 14th. We were so impressed by the changes he is proposing and implementing at his school that we wanted to learn more. We did an interview with him right then and there on the spot. Connor's ideas, passion and enthusiasm for protecting our environment and making a difference, one choice at a time is impactful. Take a moment to watch his interview:  A 10-Year-Old's Wisdom Inspires Hope for Our Island . We applaud Connor's incredible efforts and Happy Ocean will definitely keep in touch with him as his ideas and actions are further implemented. Thank you Connor, you are an inspiration!

Beeswax Wrap DIY Night - June 20th

Image
Tonight Happy Ocean hosted another Beeswax Wrap DIY Night - there was so much demand for last week's session that we hosted this one for those on the waiting list. It was a big success and the participants enjoyed the evening, and some indicated that they plan to pay it forward further and make beeswax wraps for their family and friends. They also planned to take part in the Plastic Challenge and already completed one square by joining tonight "Invest in Beeswax wraps" . Here is a sampling of the participant's creations: We also had a few participants that were unable to attend, so these beautiful kind souls made their wraps and they will be given to the three that couldn't be there. OMAK their efforts. We were pleased to hear from this amazing family that they will be bringing what they learned back to Brazil and will be talking to the bee farmers about making these beeswax wraps for their community. The ripple effect is vibrant

Multicultural Kitchen Party - West Royalty School

Happy Ocean was invited to participate at the 2nd annual Multicultural Kitchen Party at West Royalty Elementary School. There was a potluck for families and an Art Show filled with student made pieces. Performances included the West Royalty Elementary Student Choirs, Mi'kmaq dancing and drumming, student dancing and story telling. There were also cultural activities such as a flag waving Station, cultural passports and many information sharing kiosks. Happy Ocean had a kiosk showcasing our Plastic-Free Challenge, and an interactive exercise having the children reflect and respond to a photo of the boy lifting up the ocean and seeing plastic waste beneath the waves. We also gave away seed paper for children to make a wish, write their wish on the paper and then plant the seed paper in the ground (or a flower pot) to grow flowers. We also had a litterless lunch box generously donated as a door prize by Kitchens Unlimited . The children were very impressed and eager to win this amaz

Last month Happy Ocean held a Beeswax wrap session lead by Daniel Cousins, Sustainability Wizard. He taught us how to make beeswax wraps, to replace single-use plastic wrap (also known as saran wrap). Tonight we paid it forward and held a Happy Ocean DIY Beeswax/Soywax event. We had 24 individuals in attendance and several of the participants have plans to pay it forward even further by offering sessions to their colleagues and some are planning to make more wraps as gifts. We had some very creative students, here are a few of their finished products: We had so much demand for this session that we are hosting another session on June 20th, please email happyoceanpei@gmail.com if you are interested in attending. There are only a few spots left.

World Oceans Day - June 8th

World Oceans Day is held every year on June 8th to raise awareness of the vital importance of our oceans, streams and waterways and the role they play in sustaining a healthy planet. A global celebration brings people together across the globe in a series of events highlighting how we can all help protect the oceans. Happy Ocean in partnership with Ellen's Creek Watershed group held a stream and waterway clean-up today in honour of World Ocean Day. Twenty-two of us participated in a "power hour" clean-up and collected 30+ bags of garbage in addition to some larger items such as signage, car bumpers, shopping carts, drainage pipes were collected at two watershed locations. Here are some photos of our group in action, we are so grateful for the time and efforts of those who participated today! It's amazing to see the impact that 21 individuals can make in one hour.
