Plastic Free Challenge - Day 5

Today's challenge is to "bring a reusable coffee mug/cup with you". This sounds easy but until it becomes a habit it can be difficult to remember. You can either make your coffee/tea/hot chocolate (or drink of choice) and bring it with you, and/or fill it up at a local coffee shop when you are on the go. Bringing your own reusable mug/cup when you buy your morning beverage helps to cut down on unnecessary waste, saves natural resources and can even save you money.

Some coffee shops have their own reusable branded mug, and some offer discounts when you bring your own mug for a refill. As an example, Timothy's offers a 10% discount, which adds up over time if you drink a lot of coffee.

Kettle Black has a branded mug with silicone top and ceramic body. David's Tea has a 20oz stainless steel tumbler. You can purchase reusable mugs at local shops and grocery stores - even better you may opt to purchase a reusable mug that is gently used from a thrift shop.

We had an early morning Happy Ocean meeting yesterday, and although we didn't plan this, all of us that attended brought our own reusable coffee mugs/cups with us. This demonstrates even our own changes as individuals, we no longer purchase take-out coffee from establishments that use single-use plastic covers, and we support environmentally-friendly shops that are making conscious efforts to be green. For example, Juice Co uses certified compostable products, made from plants.

Over 500 billion disposable coffee cups are used around the world every year, yet less than 1% are recycled. One reusable cup is equal to 500 coffee cups. Thank you for your efforts.
