2020 Waste Reduction Week - Plastic Thursday - Partnered with City of Charlottetown

Image
Do you ever notice the pile of trash that is left over when you're done with your take-out meal? Our "throw-away" lifestyle has created tons of waste from single-use products that we use for just a few minutes. The environmental impacts on the planet from all the single-use items are enormous. For example: the average useful life of a "to-go" paper coffee cup, with the lid, the sleeve, the stir stick, and even the tray to hold it is 12 minutes! American consumers use 130 billion paper cups each year for coffee. That disposable coffee-cup habit uses 27 billion gallons of water, consumes 25 million trees, and generates 31 billion pounds of CO2. In Canada, nearly 90 percent of plastics end up in landfills, incinerators, lakes, parks and oceans. We can do better! We are determined to keep fighting for a cleaner and healthier world, and that’s why we are joining Plastics Thursday of the Waste Reduction Week, and we encourage you to do it with us! Festive Plastic-Free Challenge - December 2019

Image
For the month of December, we are launching a Festive Plastic-Free Challenge.  Each day has a green action you can make towards a zero-waste lifestyle. Our Social Media Team will be posting each day in December - sharing information and inspiration on ways you can complete the daily challenge. Happy Ocean aimed to keep the calendar neutral however you will see on Day 6 the mention of a Christmas Tree. If you don't celebrate Christmas or another holiday in December, you can substitute this day for another green action. We had a Challenge back in June and some individuals used the calendar like a Bingo card, where they crossed off actions each day in no particular order. There are no rules, every action makes a difference. Here is a link to the  Festive Calendar on Google Docs. Please share with your colleagues, friends and family. We would love to hear from you on whether you plan to participate and what region you are from.         ...

Third Annual Fix it Fair

Image
The City of Charlottetown hosted its Third Annual Fix it Fair on Saturday, November 2nd from 10am-12pm at the West Royalty Community Center. The Fix it Far included a Repair CafƩ, Hourly Workshops, and trade show style booths of community groups where participants and community groups can connect and learn about each other. The main feature of the Fix It Fair is the Repair CafƩ, which is a concept that communities throughout North America and Europe are embracing. The Repair CafƩ included talented fixers from a variety of expertise who volunteered their services to assist in the free repair of various household items throughout this event. The role of the fixers was not only to repair broken items but to share their knowledge and teach others how to perform similar repairs. Repairing broken items that would soon be sent to landfill is an important waste-reduction strategy and the City is happy to help promote this and empower people will repair skills through this event. The theme ...

A tremendous success with the TEDx Charlottetown Launch event on October 17th. Each presentation delivered very positive messages - the topics included leadership, psychological safety at work, come from away (CFA), how I learned to love networking, and Happy Ocean's plastic-free. 2019 International Coastal Cleanup Day

Image
Today is 2019 International Coastal Cleanup Day, and Happy Ocean volunteers in partnership with Parks Canada participated in a Power Hour at Robinson's Island.  We had 27 volunteers in attendance and split up into five groups to cover the full coastline of Robinson's Island. We collected two truckloads of garbage (330 pounds) including signage, lobster trap parts, broken buoys, an old football, plastic bottles and containers, broken knives, and plastic ropes. Here are some photos from the cleanup efforts. One volunteer had said "I was expecting to see lots of debris, especially after the recent storm but was pleasantly surprised not to encounter such". It is a great feeling to not see as much garbage as we expected as it shows that Islanders are taking care of our beautiful beaches.

Nick Scott: Zero Waste Businesses Google Map

Image
Zero waste shopping can be challenging, however we have some helpful resources at our finger tips including this Zero Waste Businesses Google Map that Nick Scott recently developed that can empower us to face this challenge. We want to be able to create a positive shift in our lives, we want to have healthy relations with our environment. This is a helpful user-friendly Google map; anyone with gmail can easily add a business to the list of businesses who have started taking action to cut down on single-use plastic. So please check it out, share, or add to the listing. Keep the buzz going, and our hats off in thanks to Nick Scott, for his initiative and bringing driving momentum to the zero waste movement.

The Random Acts of Green® Cross-Country Canadian Tour

Image
This past September, Random Acts of Green embarked on a Canadian Cross-Country tour to deliver the message to Canadians from coast-to-coast that climate action is important – and there are a lot of things we can all do. The primary objective of the tour was to spread the message of urgency -and to change the conversation from doom and gloom into hope and action. No Green Act is too small, no person is too young or too old, and no effort should ever go unnoticed. We’re here to INSPIRE YOU – not to judge you for things out of your control, actions that aren’t possible for you to take, or for your starting point on your green journey. Check out the  Charlottetown PEI leg of tour: To kick off the tour, Efficiency PEI hosted RAOG Team for a Lunch and Learn Session. They are a group of dedicated energy stars working toward renewable power and highlighting the importance of electric vehicles. Electric Vehicle “Only” Parking Spaces A fully electric vehicle that helps the staff at ...
