Third Annual Fix it Fair
The City of Charlottetown hosted its Third Annual Fix it Fair on Saturday, November 2nd from 10am-12pm at the West Royalty Community Center.
The Fix it Far included a Repair Café, Hourly Workshops, and trade show style booths of community groups where participants and community groups can connect and learn about each other. The main feature of the Fix It Fair is the Repair Café, which is a concept that communities throughout North America and Europe are embracing. The Repair Café included talented fixers from a variety of expertise who volunteered their services to assist in the free repair of various household items throughout this event.
The role of the fixers was not only to repair broken items but to share their knowledge and teach others how to perform similar repairs. Repairing broken items that would soon be sent to landfill is an important waste-reduction strategy and the City is happy to help promote this and empower people will repair skills through this event. The theme of this years event was all about plastic reduction as the City also recently released a single use plastic survey.
Happy Ocean had a booth with lots of visitors stopping by to learn about our initatives. The three draw winners were so joyous to get the gifts (each won a silicone straw, reusable bag, and/or beeswax wraps). The Charlottetown Mayor stopped by at our booth for more than 30 minutes and he said the City will invite Happy Ocean to their Environment Committee to discuss single-use plastic elimination. He said the City is planning to work with 15 schools in Charlottetown to eliminate single-use plastic and use reusable cutlery and containers.
