Plastic Free Challenge - Day 11
Today's challenge is to "clean up your yard and/or neighborhood of plastic litter". Our Happy Ocean community group held our first "Power Hour" from 8-930 this morning. We met at Cow's Creamery parking lot in North River and spread out along the river and roadside. Our group was very organized with sign-in sheets with emergency contacts, a safety briefing, first aid kits, buckets for sharp objects, gloves, bandanas, and tongs to pick up hard to reach items. We had 15 volunteers and collected 32 bags of garbage.
There were other Trail and Roadside cleanups taking place today, and we OMAK (Observe Merit Acknowledge Kindness) their efforts. I drove to and from Cavendish this morning and noticed hundreds of garbage bags lined up on the side of road. It is heartwarming to see Islanders coming together to help keep our Island and waterways clean.
We found a variety of items such as: a deflated rugby ball, a street sign, a 5ft metal post, syringes, wheel cover, candy wrappers, plastic bottle caps, coffee cup lids, batteries, phone cords, styrofoam, cigarette butts, and lots and lots of single use plastic.
