Plastic Free Challenge - Day 10

Today's challenge is to "invest in beeswax wraps for food". Currently many of us use cling wrap to wrap leftovers or smaller food items. I have moved to glass bowls of various sizes with covers but plan to invest in beeswax wrap today to give it a try. I have heard great things about it from our Happy Ocean committee members and others.

Plastic cling wrap is difficult to recycle, and the majority ends up in landfill where it takes hundreds of years to degrade and risks leaching chemicals into groundwater. More than 1.2 billion metres, equating to 745,000 miles of cling wrap is used by households across Britain every year – enough to go around the circumference of the world 30 times over. Now this stat is for Britain alone, I can't even imagine how many times around the world it would be for Canada and/or globally!

Bee's Wax is a sustainable, reusable alternative to plastic wrap. It's pliable so you can shape it around the food item or bowl. Once you’re done with your wrap, you just wash it with gentle soap and cool water (hot water can melt it), then let it air-dry to use it again.

I found these beeswax food wraps at Moonsnail Soapworks:

The Stitch & Time Designs wraps were also at the Etsy PEI Spring Market and are available via their Etsy Shop online:

Our Happy Ocean group is learning how to make the beeswax wraps on May 14th, and we will be sharing what we learned at a Happy Crafts session for others in June. As well, a student from the Summerside Happy Course made vegan soy wraps for all the participants last week as gifts.
