Plastic Free Challenge - Day 1

Happy first day of May, and that means today is our first day of our Happy Ocean 31-Day Plastic Free Challenge! For some, of you these challenge items will be ones you have already implemented, for others it will be a new experience and and will take some effort: living up to its name "challenge".

This initiative is meant to raise awareness of the small changes you can make in your day-to-day that over time can make a big difference. Don't worry we are not keeping score, if there is a day or a few days that you aren't able to complete the action, aim to keep single-use plastic top of mind in the choices you make throughout the day, or substitute that challenge action with another green action, or switch days with another challenge. This challenge is meant to be flexible, and the items each day are there to give you ideas and ways to eliminate plastic from your life - to help keep our oceans clean, and our planet healthy. Recycling is great, but the elimination of single-use plastic from your life is amazing. Thanks for your participation in this challenge - together we can make a difference.

Today's challenge is to "use a reusable water bottle". Sure this may sound easy but you would be surprised how often people forget their water bottles and need to go out and buy a single-use plastic bottle (or three). One reusable water bottle equals a savings of 167 plastic water bottles a year, so please use your reusable water bottle today, but aim to use one every day - keep one in your gym bag, one at the office, one beside your shoes until it becomes habit and you remember to take it with you. Whichever method works for you so that you have one with you at all times. You may find you drink much more water as a result too. Win-win.

On Earth Day at the Farm Centre members of Happy Ocean met Daniel Cousins, he is working on launching a "Reusable Water Bottle Encouragement Program". So if you are downtown and see a "Fill Up Here" sticker in the window of a merchant, you can go inside and have your water bottle filled up, free of charge. This will be so helpful, as many remember their water bottles but when they are empty it can be challenging to find a place to fill it up when you are on the go.

A few water bottle facts that he shares on his Earth Day kiosk poster:
-only 1/3 of plastic water bottles are recycled
-there is over 1000x markup in price of water
-decomposition of these bottles is 1000+ years
-average person drinks 167 plastic bottles per year

Wishing you all a great first day of the challenge!
